The Preparatory String Orchestra (PSO) is comprised of 30-60 elementary-aged violin, viola, cello, and bass students across the Albuquerque area. PSO students learn and perform music written or arranged for string orchestra, while focusing on excellent playing technique, sight reading skills, and group ensemble skills.

Note: There are no auditions for the Preparatory String Orchestra; instead a recommendation from the student’s private instructor is required, and students must be able to read and play at the appropriate level.

WEEKLY REHEARSALS:  Wednesdays 4:15pm-5:45pm (unless otherwise noted) at the AYSP Facility.

CONCERTS:  The Preparatory String Orchestra gives three performances each season – an informal concert at a public school in early December (a “School Tour”), a formal concert in December at an APS Performing Arts Center, and a formal concert in April or early May at Popejoy Hall. These three performances, along with associated dress rehearsals, are mandatory for all members of the Preparatory String Orchestra.

SCHOOL TOURS:  Preparatory String Orchestra performs annually in early December at a public school in the Albuquerque area as part of the Albuquerque Youth Symphony Program’s School Tours. The host school offers one or more assemblies in the morning (usually between 7am-12pm) for their students, during which PSO performs several pieces and students at the host school learn about classical string music. PSO students enrolled in APS schools are excused from classes on the morning of their School Tour.
