Come join us on the marimba and expand your chamber music abilities! Learn percussion technique, music theory, harmony, chamber musicianship and ‘‘groove,’’ improvisation and so much more!

The AYSP Middle School Marimba Band is a truly unique offering through our supplemental Chamber Music Program, and is open to ALL students in Junior Orchestra, Junior Symphony, and Junior Band —- no previous percussion experience is required. In addition to being an energetic and exciting ensemble, participation in this group offers you the chance to play amazing Mexican Marimbas on loan to AYSP from the late, great Steve ‘‘Marimba’’ Chavez, a local professional marimba player.

The Marimba Ensemble will play many different styles of music: traditional Mexican and New Mexican rancheras, waltzes and cumbias, classical music, and even rock and pop. There are many different jobs in the ensemble, ranging from very easy to highly challenging, and students will be encouraged to rotate and learn multiple parts.

The first rehearsal of the AYSP Marimba Ensemble will be Saturday, January 31, 2026 from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm. Registration is open to ALL students in JS, JO, and JB.

Please make sure you can attend all rehearsals and performances before registering.

Contact Mr. Corbin (JS and Marimba Ensemble conductor) at corbin@aa.edu or Dan Whisler (Chamber Music Coordinator) at dan@aysmusic.org if you have any questions about this lively musical opportunity!
