June 1-4, 2026

Join us this summer for our four-day middle school Summer String Fling! All string students in current school year (2025-2026) grades 5-7 are encouraged to join! The class will feature a final public performance, daily activities and rehearsals, and a sectional rehearsal in which students will receive assistance on the music from a local professional on their instrument. Come and meet some new friends, make some great music, improve your instrument and ensemble skills, and have fun with the Albuquerque Youth Symphony Program this summer!

WHO CAN JOIN:

Current (2025-2026) students in grades 5-7 who play violin, viola, cello, or bass. Students do not have to be a current AYSP student.

Students should be able to comfortably play this example music excerpt. Please have the student review the example before registering to ensure they are comfortable with the group’s playing level.

SCHEDULE:

Monday 6/1 – Wednesday 6/3, 8:30am – 4:00pm

Thursday 6/4, 8:30am – 7:00pm, with student art show for families and student dress rehearsal at 5:30pm, concert at 6pm, and family potluck at 6:30pm.

Please note: students will have several breaks throughout the day. Please pack all necessary food and drinks for the duration of the day (a water fountain is available for students).

All activities will be hosted at the AYSP building at 4407 Menaul Blvd NE, 87110.

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

  • Your instrument – if you use your school’s instrument during the school year and need help securing an instrument for this program, contact instructor Gloria Velasco at gloria@aysmusic.org for assistance. A music stand and music are provided.
  • Art supplies – there are daily, low-pressure art activities related to the music students are playing – please bring any pencils, colored pencils, markers, or crayons that you are interested in using.
  • All necessary food and drinks for the duration of the day (a water fountain is available for students).
  • THURSDAY 6/4 ONLY:
    • A pillow or something comfy – there will be a music-themed movie hour for students before the dress rehearsal and art show, so bring something comfy to lounge on!
    • Concert attire – students should plan for “dressy casual” attire for the concert; students are welcome to wear their outfit throughout the day or bring their clothes to change into before the concert.
    • Something yummy – we are hosting a family potluck to celebrate after the concert is finished, so please bring something to share! You can drop it off with your student in the morning on Thursday or bring it with you before the art show/concert.
