Excerpts

There is a $5 audition fee, which students should bring with them to the audition. If there is financial hardship, the students may call the AYS Program office for a fee waiver.

  • Auditions are closed to parents and the public.
  • During the auditions, students will be judged on intonation, interpretation, tone, rhythm, technique and proficiency.
  • Student placement is competitive. Students are selected by the quality of their audition performance.
  • All students must audition each season, regardless of prior participation in the AYS Program. Students are evaluated on the basis of their audition and are placed in an appropriate orchestra. Previous participation in an AYS Program orchestra does not guarantee placement.
  • Orchestra placements may not be appealed.
  • Students are not allowed to re-audition for a current season.
  • Students auditioning for all orchestras should come at the beginning of the scheduled audition time. Some students auditioning for the program are given specific times to audition according to their last names. See audition announcement for schedule.

HIGH SCHOOL AUDITIONS

Students entering the 9th grade must audition for AYS - AYO and may not audition for the junior groups.

  • You will be asked to play a randomly-picked major scale, with up to four flats and four sharps, at a tempo of quarter = 72.
  • You will need to prepare an unaccompanied solo piece of their choice
  • You must be prepared to play excerpt(s). (Excerpts can also be downloaded from our website, and will be sent to all area school band and orchestra teachers and music stores.)

Your Audition will be "blind" - the judges will have their backs turned to you as they listen. Please do not speak during your audition.

MIDDLE SCHOOL AUDITIONS

  • You will play a scale of your choice.
  • You will play a short, unaccompanied solo piece of your choice.
  • You will do a short, rhythmic sight reading.

AUDITION RESULTS NOTIFICATION

You will be notified of the result of your audition by mail by May 23, 2008. Do not call the AYS Program office prior to that date! Audition results will be posted on the AYS Program website at www.aysmusic.org after May 23, 2008.
