Alexandria Parra, Flute Soloist
The Albuquerque Youth Symphony, under the direction of Gabriel Gordon, will give the world premiere of "Earthsongs" by Composer-in-Residence Michael Mauldin on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. at Popejoy Hall. "Earthsongs" is based Native American prayers and sacred texts and is scored for full orchestra and 200 piece chorus, children's choir and four vocal soloists. Performers in this community project will include the high school students of the Albuquerque Youth Symphony, student soloists from the University of New Mexico, a children's chorus, two high school choruses, men from De Profundis and other complementary adult chorus members. In Albuquerque, instrumental and choir members seldom have the opportunity to participate in an intergenerational side-by-side music experience that a composition of this size and scope offers. "Earthsongs" has six movements, which incorporate a combination of orchestra and the various choruses and soloists. The AYS Program will perform three additional works by Michael Mauldin this season.
AYS Conductor Gabriel Gordon and "Earthsongs" composer Michael Mauldin discuss the score The concert will also feature a performance of Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copland, and the Concertino for Flute and Orchestra by Cécile Chaminade, with the second of three AYS Concerto winners, Alexandria Parra. Alexandria is a home-schooled senior, and studies privately with Teresa Bency and Valerie Potter. Alexandria is the daughter of Joseph and Lorena Parra. She plans to study the flute and music in college next year. Tickets for the Albuquerque Youth Symphony are $10.00 general admission, and the proceeds benefit the orchestra's annual concert tour to Colorado Springs and Denver, CO in March, 2010. Tickets are being sold by members of the AYS, the UNM ticket office at the UNM Bookstore (505) 925-5858, the UNM Pit ticket office and select Albertsons Supermarkets.
