Luke Rhde

World-Traveling High School Violinist Plays Solo Concerto At Albuquerque Youth Symphony Concert

The Albuquerque Youth Symphony, under the direction of Amir Kats, will present its first concert of the season on Sunday, September 17, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. at Popejoy Hall on the UNM campus. Tickets for the Albuquerque Youth Symphony are $10.00 general admission, with the proceeds to benefit the Albuquerque Youth Symphony. Tickets are being sold by members of the AYS or the UNM ticket office at 851-5050 and will be available at the door prior to the concert.

Luke Rohde, a senior at Albuquerque Academy, will be the soloist in the Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, first movement, by Aram Khatchaturian. Luke is the first of three AYS Concerto winners, and studies privately with Kathie Jarrett. Luke is the son of Mark and Karen Rohde. This past May, Luke traveled to Brazil with the Albuquerque Youth Symphony, and then spent much of the remainder of his summer at the Viana do Costelo International Music Festival in Portugal. Luke studied chamber music with students from around the world, including members of the Moscow Conservatory Orchestra. Luke also performed in a master class in January 2006 with world-famous violinist Midori. In addition to his passion for music, Luke is an avid player of Ultimate Frisbee and is on the Albuquerque Academy Debate Team.

Also on the program September 17 are the Fanfare to La Péri by Paul Dukas (featuring the AYS brass section), The Fountains of Rome by Ottorino Respighi and the "Carnival" Overture by Antonín Dvorák. The concert is sponsored by Forgemaster Iron, Inc. and the City of Albuquerque Urban Enhancement Trust Fund.

The Albuquerque Youth Orchestra, under the direction of Sayra Siverson, will give a free concert on Tuesday, September 19 at 7:30 p.m. at Eldorado High School. The AYO will be performing pieces by Handel, Khatchaturian, Herold, Grainger and Copland.
